THROWBACK: “The Breaks” by Kurtis Blow- Rap’s 1st Gold Hit

The Life As Shay Report:

Today’s Throwback is in honor of my pops! His favorite rapper was and probably still is Kurtis Blow. Blow is one of my earliest hip hop memories. My pops would play “The Breaks” over and over, he would sing it over and over and over…partly because my dad loves music and partly because he is a huge jokesters and this song his very playful. But of course, listening to my dad I picked it up! I would have to thank my parents for leading me to fall in love with the music. Kurtis Blow, from Harlem, New York was born Kurt Walker and had the 1st rap song to EVER go gold with “The Breaks.” He is also said to be the 1st rapper to perform internationally. “The Breaks” is a song about all the things that will make you pause in life…”these are the breaks…”
