The Michael Jackson Birthday Edition of the #TheLifeAsShayReport is here:
Now, I must admit, I always loved Michael Jackson and growing up I was right in the middle of some of his most successful times as a solo artist. MJ was, and still is, so epic and electrifying that his music from decades before my conception has been able to transcend time and become beloved amongst those of my generation and generation upon generation to follow.
You just always knew he was the GREATEST, it wasn’t debatable.
I understood that and wholeheartedly agreed but I didn’t REALLY GET IT until I saw the “Rock with You” video. Way back when, on Saturdays BET used to feature a countdown where artists shared their Top 25 Videos. And of course me loving music, I would attentively tune in every week- just watching, learning and listening. The bottom 20 videos would always vary from artist to artist but each artist’s Top 5 would always be some medley of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Luther Vandross and Prince.
I am not sure whose countdown I was watching this particular day but this time Michael Jackson’s “Rock with You” video came on. I knew the song, I loved the song but never had the chance to watch the video; this was the time before YouTube—HOW TRAGIC. This one day I watched and I was….
I could not believe how captivating he was with nothing but a blank space, lighting effects and a matching sparkly pants, sweater and boots combo. I was AMAZED. I had my MJ video favorites like “Remember The Time”, “Smooth Criminal” and “Thriller” all of which had exciting, elaborate plots that made them more of mini-movies than music videos.
BUT THIS ONE! I could not understand how a simple video of just MJ, no special effects, no back-up dancers, no storyline could blow me away. It felt like he was performing for me—ME, AND ONLY ME. He was so smooth and cool, yet passionate and strong…THAT DAY is when I understood why people screamed and fainted in his presence, cried if he looked in their direction and fought for his autograph. We were experiencing the times, music, and gifts of a Musical King.
Happy Birthday MJ!
The Official #LifeAsShay Report—That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
