The Life As Shay Report:

Kendrick Lamar released the greatly anticipated song “I” a few days ago. This is the 1st single released from the TDE leader since the closing credits rolled from his 2012 debut album Good Kid M.A.A.D. City. And then he releases “I” as in “I love Myself” and the single cover art is two hands forming hearts…one side a member of the Bloods the other a member of the Crips. NOW! There is much to be said about the song and some people are less than pleased…borderline CONFUSED at the sound.

This was a chess move made by the TDE camp, they are testing the waters to see just how alternative they can go with Kendrick Lamar‘s sound and messaging. This is by far the most unique sound I have heard from Kendrick but it is in line with the seemingly nature progression and evolution of his music. Listen to his mixtape, Section 80. This song could have very well fit onto an extended version of the tape just for the instrument choice and lyrical content alone. If you are only familiar with Kendrick Lamar from Good Kid M.A.A.D City down this song may be a “WTF” moment for you. But the bait-and-switch is so real on this track that even if you don’t like it initially you will listen at least one more to time to catch some of the gems buried throughout the song. Once more, who can say that they “hate” a positive song about self-love?

Talk to me? What do you think about it?
