Flashback Friday: Ice Cube’s “Today Was A Good Day” & The Isley Brothers’ Sample

The Life As Shay Report:

Today’s Flashback Friday is a double whammy! It’s Friday and it feels good to finish up a good week after a beautiful holiday break. With that in mind, when I’m having a Good Friday I always think of Ice Cube, yup that’s crazy right. Partly due to the movie Friday and partly due to his song “Today Was A Good Day.”

But we can’t talk about “Today Was A Good Day” without addressing the dope The Isley Brothers’ sample of “Footsteps in Dark.” The Isley Brothers formed in the 1950s and had one of the longest running, successful careers to date. Most of you may be familiar with Ron Isley due to his still very successful career as a solo artist. But this sample is fire! This is a straight forward clean sample that flipped the concept of questioning an old love into a gangsta ride along, but the quality of the original was not mismanaged by Ice Cube’s one bit. If you listen closely, I don’t think they changed a thing from the original instrumental.

So here’s to a good Friday and an even better weekend.
