The Life As Shay Report:
Last night the Hollywood Awards season continued with the 2015 Golden Globe Awards. The red carpet was entertaining, like just about any other year, the entertainers were suited and booted from head to toe. Usually, it’s painstaking for me to watch shows awarding film and TV because, quite frankly, “That’s Not My Thing”, I’m more of a music girl. Go figure lol So last night my joy came with the categories for “Best Original Score” and “Best Original Song.” And Wow, Hip Hop Artist, Actor and Humanitarian, Common‘s “Glory” took the win for “Best Original Song” featuring John Legend for the film, Selma. (Selma follows the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s campaign for equal rights a mist the Civil Rights Movement and his march from Selma to Montgomery, AL.That was a mouthful…but so was Common’s speech.
He packed so much into his 2 minute Thanks Yous. The native Chicagoan was able to address the racially charged climate of America, surrounding the recent killings of unarmed African American teens before a room full of non-minorities without causing a stir. He is the real VIP. For his ability to so eloquently say exactly what he wanted to say with taste and class before the world from the stage of the Golden Globes was one of the most beautiful things to witness.
“I am the unarmed black kid that maybe needed a hand but instead was given a bullet.”-Common. Faithful to his commitment of uplifting the African American community. Faithful to the end. The only song that comes to mind with that speech is Common’s “Faithful” (which also features John Legend) Congrats!
Here is “Glory” LIVE! (The 2015 Golden Globe “Best Original Song”)
